HTW - PC or Mac?

To increase your holiday spunk, I've decided to gift you with an entire week of Hot Topics suggested by you, culminating on Wednesday with a special post of my own. Yeah, I'm giggling, too.

I don't have time to address all of your hot topic suggestions this week, but I will go for the most requested and/or interesting and/or easiest and/or most fragrant. Unlike our Christmas tree, which does NOT smell very strong. I'm going to kick it in the shins.

From Julie: "It's not juicy, but I'd like to hear people's views on PC vs. Mac. We're trying to decide!"

This one is easy, interesting and possibly fragrant. Go with the Mac, Julie, and never look back.

I mean, are there PC people out there any more? We own one, but it's merely an economic issue. I feel like we have come together as a nation to agree that Macs are prettier, smarter, cooler, faster and better. (Next up, political unity!)

As a career lass, I always worked on a Mac, mostly because publishing software is way more compatible with the creative-minded Mac. There were times I lamented this - like when I would go to CTRL-C something after a night at home, only to remember those functions must be tweaked on a Mac - but that was about the extent of my frustration.

There was also a time when popular programs like Microsoft Office were only available for PCs. That sucked. But now everything is available for Mac and compatible with either, so emails and attachments are no longer a big issue.

It's kind of like owning a Zune when you could have an iPod. Seriously?

But I want to hear what other people say. Are there PC lovers left out there, or have you all been swayed by Apple's youthful, musical advertising? I know I have.

Is your house a PC or Mac household?

Which do you prefer/want/covet?

p.s. Please do email Apple and let them know that I just gave them some blatant advertising and will humbly accept a small token of appreciation. (By small token, I mean an iPhone, iMac, MacBook Pro and Apple TV.)

p.p.s. Some of you requested Hot Topics that have already been vented on me olde blog:
For circumcision, go here.
For immunizations, go here.
For potty training, go here.
For working moms, go here.

We're very much a mac family. But it wasn't always that way. I grew up using a mac because my mom was a teacher. My husband has only known a pc. But just this year I convinced him a mac is the only way to go. We'll never go back.

i'll probably be on my own here... but im totally a PC lover! let me preface my decision by saying that i haven't used a mac in seriously forever. but i do remember not liking it. i mean... you can't even right click!!! what is that all about?! lol. but then again i dont do anything that requires all of a mac's coolness. i pretty much stick to the inet and microsoft office stuff... so maybe i'll just let you mac lovers win on this one. i just dont think i'll ever switch :P

I am a PC user. My dad has had a computer business since 1986 and that is what we sell/build. When I taught school I used a mac. I would get very frustrated with it because things weren't the same. I am happy to use my PC!

I echo "Young Family". My only real exposure to Macs was when I was teaching school, and I was always frustrated with the little differences. I hear that Macs are superior, and I even believe it, but I would have to use one before dropping that much money on something I wasn't sure about. So for now I will be a PC girl, but I will thoroughly enjoy watching Mac rule the advertising world.

New to your blog. Love it! Macs all the way. Currently we have five at our house. My husband has to use a PC at work and comes home practically crying each night.
So intuitive. So easy to use. So fun. So cool. (typing this on my Macbook Air!)

Elizabeth said...

Definitely MAC but there are drawbacks with software compatibility and I still have to use the hubby's PC for certain things.

Oh and hot corners are THE BEST! I couldnt live without them now.

First of all, I love the pictures!
We are a PC family. I grew up on Macs - starting from the very first one. The first time I used a PC was in 2000 for work. If memory serves, Mac wasn't living up to the PC right then. I used my Mac until it died and then never replaced it. I have been using a PC since.
My reasons for not converting back over are partially because my husband can build us fantastic PCs (as a hobby!) Who knows, maybe some day I will go back, but I feel no shame, don't think I'm uncool, and I am certainly not a big nerdy man with glasses. Well, I do wear glasses. And I could lose a few pounds. But totally no nerdy!

If you don't buy a mac for any other reason--buy one for their customer service. After dealing with HP customer hell for over 8 months, waiting for them to send me a replacement laptop (it took me filing a complaint with the BBB for them to finally own up!), I wish I had paid the extra $$$ and purchased a mac.

i'm def. a mac girl.

Mac, no question. I grew up in a Mac family and was considered a trader when I married a PC man, but he converted about 2 years ago and will never look back. It seems that if you want a computer that will work for media, there's no comparison. We're all decked out on the Mac side of things and I love it, our Apple TV is freakin' awesome. Seriously I can't say enought, there's just no comparison. But if you want a computer to make Excel files and use Quicken PC might be better, anything else? Mac.

My husband says buying a Mac is like buying a car with the hood welded shut. You can't upgrade or tinker or anything, but if you're willing to pay more for the convenience it's worth it. We're PC folks because he is such a tinkerer.

kristenita said...

MAC.

grew up on PCs, used them in college (mostly) & switched once I couldn't take another PC getting a virus or crashing for no reason. I've gone MAC & will never go back!

Lindsey said...

WOW! The immunization topic was VERY hot! It made me want to leave my own diatribe, but after 60 comments, I don't think anyone would read it! :)

Acutally, I love my PC.. .My parents have a Mac, and it is pesky. However, I don't do publishing, editing, or anything of the like..so I can't speak to that.

Nikkala said...

My story is similar to Caroline's, except I was the PC user marrying into a Mac family. And when I say Mac family I mean the entire family, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins--since the beginning of Apple computers they have been there. I quickly was indoctrinated and eventually converted over to Mac. Now they let me sit at the table with the rest of them.

We mac (I think it's a verb now) as well. I have a PC next to my mac that gets turned on for all of 5 minutes a week so I can bill. Stupid State of Idaho isn't mac compatible!

whitney said...

hands down - MAC.

I've been lurking on your blog ever since you guest posted on Design Mom - so here I am making a comment. Definitely Mac! I had bad "computer karma" for so many years and then I got a Mac and my computer life has been heaven! My husband still has a PC (laptop) and says he hates my Mac - but I don't care! And I'm getting and iphone for Christmas!!!!

Abbie said...

We use PCs. We've never had virus trouble, don't do anything creative, and just use computers for school, internet, etc. How can you justify spending 5x as much on a Mac when the PC does the same thing?

And I don't need to be cool.

Emma said...

I've always used a PC - my dad got into the computer business in 1976 - who knew back then. I used Mac in elementary school, but didn't care for them. I've heard lots of great things about them, but since I don't use their superior programs (photo, video etc.), I'll stick with my PC.
I'm not saying I'll never buy a Mac, it's just not what I'm used to.

Heather said...

We would never own a Mac. My husband is a computer man, computers are what keeps this household clothed and fed and all the other glorious things. I am totally a PC lover. My husband builds our servers and computers for much cheaper than you can buy a mac or PC from a store.
I will say the only thing that
Apple does well is advertising.

Cichelli said...

I own a mac book pro and my husband has a mac book. We have iphones and ipods and swear by itunes.

I think people who use PCs do so because they are used to it and don't want to invest the time to learn MACs, which is totally their right.

Right now Apple is the superior brand. But remember the 80s when MACs were everywhere, but then the 90s came when MACs sucked and PCs kicked ass? You never know... So as of 2008/09, we are a MAC family. But if MAC gets complacent and other companies start turning out better equipment, I would change.

i know almost everything there is to know about PC and once i tried using a friend's mac and felt like i was blind in the desert. i could not get to my destination and fury instantly filled my brain.

i can work and fix and tweak a pc, i'm comfortable, and, like abbie, i don't need to be cool. nor does robby. we stand on a pretty united front with our decisions and opinions in marriage which is really nice. cuz he's totally awesome.

mac-no
PC-GO!

If a Mac is like buying a car with its hood welded shut, it's like buying a PORSCHE with its hood welded shut, verses a vehicle that chugs to a stop every now and again on a busy thoroughfare. Owning a PC was not good for my marriage and gave me a potty mouth. I don't think I'd ever uttered the F-word in earnest until I had to deal with our last computer and its frequent plague, the aptly named "blue screen of death."

Since we bought a Mac, it has been smooth sailing, engine purring along at 90 MPH. And I haven't cursed at it or threatened to throw it out a window once. Bless my lovely, reliable Mac. I will never buy a PC again.

PC. I grew up with macs but being married to a man who is a programmer and web/graphic designer, it's nothing but PC's around here for us!

Mia said...

Definitely a Mac.

Growing up we had PCs at home but used Macs at school. When my parents bought me my own computer I begged for a Mac but got a PC instead. It was practically the death of me!

My husband always had used Macs at work so he was familiar with both though he wasn't a fan of the price, we still got a MacBook for our next computer and while it's been pretty sensitive I LOVE applecare & the genius bar.

Right now our little MacBook was sent out for a once and for all fixin' and I got my Christmas MacBook Pro a couple of weeks early :). I LOVE it!

I remember fighting with my cousins over which was better, mac/pc. This was when the Apple2E was in vogue. Anyway, since mac OSX I've been a hardcore apple fan. I love my 24" imac, my 15" powerbook, my ipods and my husband's iphone. I'm a loner in my family since everyone is PC to the core.
Anyway, macs are fabulous products. If anyone is considering mac/pc, go for a mac and GET APPLECARE. It'll be the best decision you've ever made.
OH, and I just sold my 4 year old 12" powerbook laptop for $350. Pc's don't hold their value for very long.

We have 2 PCs but after seeing your bro's MAC, I think I may want to convert when it's time for a new desk top. My decision has nothing to do with legitimate MAC v. PC issues....it has one cord! One beautiful cord and that is it! No web of cords! no ugly box! Just a screen and a mouse. Lovely!

oh and I hate windows vista. HATE.

Azúcar said...

We are PC!

And YES, we own a Mac and we hate it.

Boo, Mac.

(Although I love your iPods verryverry much.)

Mac.
They are much easier to use, hardly ever crash, are more versatile, and hardly ever get viruses. They ARE more decorative, which is particularly valuable if you live in a small space where you and your guests always have to look at it--but that's honestly at the bottom of my list.

We have lost several PCs since 2002, but I've had the same Mac hardrive that I keep updating since the year 2000. It only crashed/froze like twice until I got my first upgrade and never since, and has NEVER had a virus!

I understand that those schooled on PCs don't necessarily find the Mac easier to use, but it's a matter of having been brainwashed, and once you free yourself of the complicated PC ways, you see the light. Spoken by an authentic convert, people!

Azúcar said...

Oh, and I LOVE Vista.

karen said...

PS
Did you get the part where I have the same computer since 2000 and it still works, better than ever? Who has ever heard of that within a product line that outdates itself every second?

PPS
Mac customer service is outstanding.

Azúcar said...

I like how people think that if I would just use a Mac, if I only actually took the time to learn how to use a Mac, I'd be converted.

I know how to use a Mac. I have used Macs on and off for almost two decades. We OWN a Mac.

And guess what?

I STILL LOVE PCs.

My PCs don't crash because they were built right and I know how to operate them. We have three PCs to one Mac at our house.

So there, you patronizing Mac users, *giggle* we luurve our PCs.

ginny said...

It's an apples and oranges comparison (no pun intended on the apple bit), because PC is a platform that many different computer manufacturers use and have improved upon throughout the years, whereas Apple consistently refused to license its Mac platform to others and is therefore both the OS author and the hardware manufacturer. Incidentally, this was an idiotic decision on Apple's part as it nearly bankrupted the company during the tech boom and has resulted in Mac's miniscule market share--one so small that the viruswriters of the world don't even bother with it.

Point is, you have to compare Macs to Compaqs, HPs, Dells, etc., not the entire PC world at once. I'm a big fan of Dells and think their support and warranty are just as good as Applecare. Plus, they are so comparatively cheap that you can buy a new one 3X as often as a Mac. You can get a decent starter Dell desktop for the price of an iPhone.

I used to be a design geek and used Macs all the time in school, but that was back when hardly any software was cross-platform and all the good design software was only available for Macs. Nowadays you can get the exact same programs to run with the exact same features on a PC, so why not.

So I'm a PC girl. I will admit that Macs often look better and they have a savvier advertising campaign. But when I buy a computer, I like to know I'm paying for stuff in the computer, not quirky commercials with a Drew Barrymore throwaway.

PC for me! My family had macs when I was growing up. But in high school I tried my first PC - way better!

People say that Macs are easier to use and intuitive and so easy for first time computer users. I disagree.

Plus, my husband is a computer guy -he's the IT Manager for a major resort- and he's PC. I lived in a dorm of computer nerds, I've really only dated computer people, my good friends in college all majored in a computer related fields....ask any of them, PC or bust!

Mindy said...

MizAC all the way. The thought of pressing control/alt/delete to re-boot the computer AGAIN makes me queasy.

Karen said...

I still use a PC. My Dad is a whiz with computers & can build them for me (he does this for free!), so I will be a PC user until Dad either stops building computers, or decides to go work for Apple.

Anna said...

For some reason Mac users thing Mac vs PC is a holy war...in my experience Mac is prettier....but that's about it. I think PCs work just fine. And you cannot get everything on a mac these days, I choose to stick with my PC. But I might get an iphone for its fun and cuteness.

Carrie said...

After trying to post pictures on my blog via our Mac, I'm going with PC all the way. This machine is crap and I HATE it. I wish our PC hadn't died last week!

For all you creative types who think Macs have got nothing on PCs, let me just say that my husband works for a newspaper and has for many years... they're all switching to PCs, even the graphic artists because they are more compatible with stuff and they are easier to use and less expensive.

My husband is a computer whiz and can fix/upgrade our PC when it freaks out, but you can't do that with a Mac, which he hates.

steph said...

you can right-click on macs (thank you, mighty mouse!).

MACs are the bomb-diggity without a doubt, my dear missus dubby!

My Mac can run Vista. Can your PC run Leopard?

Didn't think so.

Why settle for one, when you can get both?
