From (my lovely, cute, witty SIL) Steph: "To wash hair daily or not to wash hair daily... This is something I struggle with."
OK, I'm putting this one out there for the blog peeps, because I don't know the answer. I've always been a daily hair washer, except for those rare days that I don't shower, in which case I'm usually ponytailing it and void of any beauty efforts. However, I did read a little snippet in Marie Claire recently about Jessica Simpson, where stylist, bestie and chihuaha descendant Ken Paves said that she only washes her hair "two or three times a month." I'd give you the exact quote, but that's the point where I accidentally dropped my magazine into the toilet. Because that seems blatantly digusting. And, yet, the body ... the shine ... the Texas-ness of her golden locks. He did emphasize that you have to RINSE your hair daily, but what exactly does that entail? Because after reading his claim, I boldly went one day without shampooing my hair but styled it as normal ... and about three hours later I felt like I had been in a snowstorm. My hair was a flat, greasy mess. So now I'm wondering if this is another "chicken of the sea" issue, because Jessica might think that "rinsing" means using a clarifying shampoo daily, while "washing" her hair means using a conditioning, fancy-pants shampoo. Because there is NO WAY that her hair looks like that after bimonthly washings. Unless ... she means she only washes it herself two or three times a month, because her stylists, assistants and dad wash it for her every other time. That's probably the explanation. Silly Jess!
What about you?
Do you wash your hair daily?
Do you shower daily?
Do you brush your teeth daily?
Just checking.

OK - to set the record straight...SHE does not wash her hair...someone in hari and make up does it FOR her!!!!! Hee hee!
Me - I wash, show and brush every day!
so you don't know me and i don't even remember how i found your blog so i feel totally safe putting this out there: i wash my hair once a week. that's it. and i think if you met me in person, you'd only start questioning it on day 5. (and no, i'm not 75 years old getting it set at the beauty parlor. i'm 31. and cool. at least to me.)
however, this is something i've been training my hair to do for years. do NOT try that at home. you have your work your hair up to it.
i only shower on days that i run and, which, thankfully are most days, and sundays. but on the two days a week i work my 6:30a until 5:00p schedule (with a 40-minute commute each way), no freaking way am i fitting a shower in there. i sit at a desk and see almost no one. plus, i hate hate hate showers.
but yes, i faithfully brush my teeth, sometimes even three times a day. i love that clean-teeth feeling.
hmm...maybe i should have just posted this on my blog and sent you the link. sorry. i guess i have stronger feelings about this than i knew.
i only wash my hair about 2-3 times a week because i shower every other day and because i have read and heard multiple times that it is not good for your hair to wash it everyday. the best trick for greasy hair is to rub some baby powder in at the roots. this will buy you at least one extra day of not washing it. and i brush my teeth everyday.
As I have aged (yes ... it's true) I wash my hair less -- and benefit more. Every day for years and years. Then every other day and now I am experimenting with the every third day and I have to admit that my hair is in better shape.
But I still shower every day. Just for the record.
I wash my hair everyday, shower daily and brush my teeth multiple times a day. I don't care if washing my hair daily dries it out. I like the feel of clean.
I did not shower the day after surgery but you better believe I showered the next day.
i shower, wash my hair and brush everyday! i can't not.
i usually only wash my hair every other day, mostly because i don't want to blow dry it every morning and it looks sad un-blowdried. i've also heard it dries out your hair if you wash it every day. sometimes i'll sprinkle a little baby powder in it and run the blow drier through it for about ten seconds to freshen it up on the second day. they make some stuff called dry shampoo which is supposed to be great, too. i dunno.
Shower daily? Yes! Teeth? Twice or three times a day! Hair? 3-4 times a week. I have HUGE hair. I get the most compliments on my hair when I'm on day 3 of no hair washing, I guess because it's really flat that day, instead of my usual fro. But I can't STAND it being greasy, so I usually wash hair every other day. :)
NO WAY! I love this topic because I just discussed it with MYSELF! Everyone around here always looks fab, and I think, HOW can you do that EVERYDAY! Their secret..no hair washing.. just re-"do" ing. I thought my greaseball hair could never handle it, but, I tried it several times.. Wash.. don't wash... wash.. don't wash. Sometimes I "did" it on the days that I washed it.. some days I didn't but my hair actually started to conform, and didn't get as greasy as it did before! (AMAZING!) On days that I DID do it (and didn't wash it) I used powder in my hair so soak up the oil. I used just regular old powder, (sparingly- so you don't look like you should be in a corset dancing to a minuette) OR you can use a product ACTUALLY MADE for that which is of course Bumble and Bumble hair powder in your color (About $25 if you want to spend it!) GOOD LUCK!
PS- Since then, I have stopped because I got my hair cut and felt like I could actually "do" it without it taking FOREVER!
I shower every day, brush teeth multiple times a day but I only wash my hair every two to three days. I had to work up to that and my hair is so much better on days two and three. I hate blow drying it every day and it was getting really frizzy and dry. I think 2-3 times a month is pushing it though. If anyone could pull it off it would be Jessica.
I wash every other day because my hair gets too dry if I wash every day. I roomed with my beauty school attending cousin in college though, and she rinsed it in the shower (got wet without shampoo) most days and only washed it once a week or so. She maintained that the residual goop enabled her hair to style more easily. And her hair did always look great, though I found it sort of strange that it looked exactly the same when she woke up as when she went to bed...
It's true for me, too, that an extra day's goop facilitates styling, but I just can't bring myself to go more than every other day without shampooing.
In the winter I take a shower and wash my hair every other day. In the dead hot summer I sometimes shower and shampoo every day.
On the no shower or shampoo days, I just have to dampen my hair slightly and blow dry it with the round brush, but that takes about 2-3 minutes and really does look better than the "wash" days.
But on the third day? NO way. Right when I wake up it actually looks like it could go another day, but about an hour later, pretty much like clockwork, the oil takes over.
I have a friend with the thickest head of hair I have ever seen. I mean thick. I bet if she cut it all off she'd have lost about 5 lb. She washes her hair once a week and it looks great even on the 5th day. I guess it just depends on your hair type.
I've got limp locks. I shower everyday, but wash my whole head of hair every-other day. On my "off" days I still shampoo the little bit of bangs that I have. I slather on the moisturizer at night so my bangs are covered in goo every morning.
I don't really like my hair. If only I had my own stylist/chihuahua.
My blonde children all have really dry hair. Maybe that's the kind of hair that Jessica has. She can take skipping a few days (there is NO WAY she goes more than 5 days, though! Not possible for a caucasian!)
shower daily - YES, at least once!!
brush daily - about 5 times!
...and let's not forget to FLOSS daily too.
hair - I go as long as I can without washing... lately I can go 2 (or lately, 3) days, until it feels stinky or greasy. especially if I straighten my nat-curly hair, you bet I am going to try to go as many days as I can with no washing! it takes forever to get it totally straight & then water becomes the enemy at that point.
(p.s. it totally depends on what shampoo/conditioner I use to as to how long it takes for my hair to get greasy again.)
jessica, really?
I shower everyday, and I brush my teeth morning and night... thrice on Sundays :)
I have incredibly thick and wavy Filipino hair. Every 6 months when my hairstylist 'prunes' my hair, I still have a ton of hair on my head with enough cut off to make a wig for both my kids.
Just this Summer, I tried to transition from a daily shampooing routine to a once-a-week shampoo. The first MONTH was horrible!
Yes, it takes about a month for your scalp to realize it doesn't have to gush oil as often (which it does every you strip your hair with shampoo).
But after the oils normalized, it became really nice. My hair now feels healthier, fuller, and less stripped of natural oils.
And yes, I rinse my hair every time I shower. I just let water run through it and use a wide-tooth comb to detangle (while in the shower).
I highly recommend this for everyone. Seriously.
First I have to thank the commenters - I had never tried baby powder (in my DINKY life, I used Bumble & Bumble hair powder), just did it with the blow dryer for 10 seconds, and my hair looks and feels AWESOME.
I go every other day with hair washing (today when I tested out the baby powder in a non hair washing day). My hair turns to hay if I wash everyday. I will also second (third? fourth?) that going a week without washing your hair is possible. I had a friend that did this in college and her hair was BEAUTIFUL. I attempted the same weaning process and my hair looked nasty so I gave up.
Now, Jessica Simpson I can see because doesn't she have a weave? I don't think you can wash your hair that much with a weave.
In the summer, daily hair-washing is a must for me; I mean come on, when it's 115 degrees I absolutely cannot stand the feeling of not washing it daily. In the winter I do about 4 days/wk because I like to take occasional hot baths, the weather being so "cold" and all.
I have heard about that baby powder thing but haven't tried it...
I agree that it's all about your hair type. I've got super-thick hair, not particularly greasy, and I wash it every other day, per a former stylist's recommendation. It's never even occurred to me to get it wet without washing it... If I've already got to start from scratch, why not just wash it too? I'll have to give that a try.
And I shower daily. I can't function until I've showered in the morning. It's too deeply ingrained. Floss daily, brush my teeth twice a day. Most of the time. :)
i wash my hair usually twice maybe three times a week. (and actually when i say "wash" i just mean shower it, i don't use shampoo, just conditioner!) now MAYBE this works better for me because i have incredibly curly hair and my hair doesn't get greasy.
but i have talked to others and really you have to "train" your scalp to do this. and it does take forever! so you might have to wait awhile for it to look normal, i know when my cousin tried this tactic she did it in the summer when we were at our cabin because that way she didn't have to go out in public while her head was learning how to be un-greasy!
anyways. good luck...i think it really is helpful once you train your scalp...that part is the hard part!
As to JS, when there are so few brain cells resident, you can't take the chance on washing any of them away by frequent shampooing. For the rest of the world, I think daily for guys (unless they have pretty long hair) and every two or three days for gals is the social requirement. Whatever is lost in hair condition is made up for in aroma improvement. Fortunately, my current semi-permanent baldness leaves me free to bathe at whatever interval is necessary to still be welcome in polite company.
my hair is really dry and long, so i wash every other day, or every two days. but you can't tell. if i washed it everyday it would dry and nasty. and i prefer that to oily and nasty.
She wears hair pieces most of the time. She sells them at the professional beauty supplies. Most of the celebrities do this, especially those who work with ken paves. I know Eva Longoria wears them, she admitted it on an interview.
So, it doesn't matter so much if she doesn't.
Dirty hair (2 day old) can sometime work really well for certain styles and certain textures of hair.
I go 2 days, have fine hair. If you use tons of pomade or shine sprays you probably can't go as long in between.
My hair is naturally curly so I do a "recycled hairdo" with every other day washings (and sometimes I push it to every three days because I'm lazy) to keep it from drying out. I shower every day (usually--but school can start awfully early and I like the snooze button so sometimes I push it too far and the shower gets "postponed" with a PTA bath). And teeth brushing happens 2-3 times/day. Flossing, on the other hand...
Essentially I'm saying I have questionable hygiene (gasp!).
I have thick wavy hair so when I do blow it out straight, I usually can get it to last 4-5 days before I need to wash it again (I still shower daily, I just don't wash my hair).
When I wear my hair wavy, I have to get it wet daily (since it looks crazy the next day), but I usually just get it wet and then condition it.
My hair dresser gave me the same recommendation as Ken Paves, just not as extreme. She told me to wash my hair 1-2 times a week max. She said that washing strips the hair folicle of its natural oils.
But for people with oily hair or thin hair, I think you may need to wash daily. I think you just do whatever works for you.
Besides, all of Ken Paves clients wear fake hair anyway.
I shower and wash my hair everyday (and brush my teeth 2 x a day). I have thin, wavy hair, and it gets limp and greasy if I don't wash it. I don't ever blow dry it - OK maybe once a year.
However, after reading comments, I think I might try not washing every once in a while. I hadn't thought about "working up to it". I will still shower everyday though.
I only wash my hair every other day. One, my hair is super dry and two, I don't want to blow dry and "do" it everyday! Lazy, yes.
I have to shower everyday even if no hair washing. I just have to. I even have a cool shower cap for the off days. Use should try one, it's hot. :)
I.am.sorry. if you are one of those people that washes your hair every few days, but I think that is dis.gus.ting!! I have a couple friends and a cousin that do that and sorry, but it's obvious. I just think it's gross to have oily, greasy hair. It's very Britney. And unclean.
Sorry! I have very strong feelings about this. YUCK!
Amber, I'd be willing to bet you see people all the time who don't wash their hair everyday and you are none the wiser. You've probably even complemented someone on their nice hairdo without even knowing it's 2-day-old.
Now, I have a followup question for some folks that can go longer than 2 days without washing hair. Do you use product in your hair? I love the idea of just rinsing it off in the shower, but as someone else said, once I get it wet, I might as well go the distance and shampoo. I feel that, because I use hairspray {thin flat, frizzy hair without it} if I were to just rinse it off, it wouldn't do as well with the spray build up. Please discuss.
=)
This has been so interesting! I have stick-straight blonde hair, and I wash it every day. If I don't, it looks greasy and nasty. The only way I can get around a morning wash is if I washed it the night before after going to the gym. Even then, by the evening it looks yucky again.
Going more than 2 days sounds pretty gross to me, but I guess if that made my hair look awesome I'd do it too!
I wash (and don't rinse the days between) my hair every other day. Cuz it gets too dry and frizzy if I wash it every day. And shower and brush teeth every day. For the record.
You are too funny! No one cares how often I wash my hair but I have to say that your blog is my favorite of all time.
I care Brooke! =)
I generally wash it every other day to every third day. I have very curly hair that can't be slept on otherwise it needs to be rinsed out the next day and styled again. when I do it straight I usually wash it the night before and then go two days with it straight before washing again.
And then...
last week I tried just rinsing for days instead of washing it with shampoo. THE SHINE, THE BODY, THE PERFECT CURLS. I tipped my head under the bath faucet and wet/rinsed my hair with just water. I let it dry curly with just a little scrunching. AMAZING HAIR. I may never go back to shampooing it every other day ever again.
Oh, yes, I believe in the power of residual hair product.
(For the process: rinse upside down under faucet, take a towel and push the hair up to scrunch hair--be gentle. Spray with spray gel. LEAVE ALONE until almost dry. Use a little shine pomade if you like.)
Well, I am a cosmetologist and usually I suggest that you wash every other day. That rule, of course, has some exceptions. For example, if your hair is super oily then you would shampoo every day, but only condition every other day. But every head of hair is different and you have to play it by ear, or hair in this case.
Every hair stylist I have had (and I have had PLENTY) has told me to only wash my hair (meaning shampoo and conditioner) about every 5 days. And in between I am supposed to just rinse my hair every other day with HOT then cold water.
I have never done this. Seems insane. For one I am not getting naked and getting the shower to get out with still dirty (but RINSED) hair. Too much effort. So I wash my hair (shampoo and conditioner) every other day (sometimes I go 3 days!!! ewwwww. gross huh?)...
And I am constantly being told I have great and healthy hair. By strangers even! So it works for me....and that is all I can say.
(note; baby powder in the roots inbetween washings acts like 'dry shampoo' and really helps it be less greasy. Of course people will ask why your hair smells like a babys butt all day.)
Yeah- that is GLAMOROUS! :)
My hair stylist told me to wash every OTHER day, that any more strips it of natural oils. But I have sweepy bangs which get greasy so I wash my bangs every day... or wear it back. Honestly I wash maybe 2-3 times a week... thank goodness for Bumble & Bumble hair powder.
I have friends with really dry hair though, and so they wash it once a week. They're just blessed with amazing hair body.
Am I gross to admit I don't shower every day? I do on work days, or I just exercised days, but not every day. And for the record, I only shave my legs 1-2x a week. I just don't have the time.
I'm disgusting, I know.
I brush my teeth every day.
I don't wash my hair every day. I usually go four or sometimes five (in the dry winter) days before washing my hair. I don't even get it wet when I shower. And it totally works for my curly, dryish, thick hair.
I have heard several times over the last few years that washing one's hair with shampoo is not necessary unless it is actually DIRTY (like with sand or mud or something sticky in it.) Just rinsing it with water is supposed to be enough. There is however, a "learning curve" for your hair. It will be greasy the first few times you just rinse it with water. But eventually your hair will adapt and the natural oils from your scalp will keep it nice. I've never gotten to that point, but that's what I've heard!
I used to shampoo my hair every day. Until the hairstylist for my sister's wedding got so frustrated with me because I washed my hair the night before the wedding even though he asked me not to. So since then (high school) I try to only shampoo my hair every other day. And it's great! If I wash my hair every day, it gets very dry - despite living on a tropical island that is crazy humid. However, because I live on a hot, sweaty, salty tropical island, every few weeks there is bound to be a back-to-back shampooing.
Like a few others have commented, I can't really imagine just rinsing my hair. If it gets wet, it gets washed.
Also, since others have mentioned it - I shower every evening. I just can't imagine it any other way. I was totally amazed and grossed out to read your HTT on daily showering and find out that there are so many people out there who don't take daily showers.
I've heard that the way to stop the oiliness is to finish your shower with a cold rinse. Hot water opens pores/hair follicles, cold water closes them resulting in less oil in your hair. Don't know if it is just an old wives tale or not. For the record, I wash every 2-3 days, and my hair always looks better on day 2. I don't use product though so can get away with it not getting greasy and weighed down with product.
Whoops! I just realized that you actually asked about showering and brushing teeth.
Everyone in my family showers daily (my kids and my husband wash their hair daily) and brushes their teeth at least twice a day (my daughter usually brushes her teeth 3 to 4 times a day). We take our showers in the evening - until college I used to shower in the mornings and in the evenings, but if I only have time to do it once, it's going to be at the end of the day.
I wash my hair usually every day. I will skip a day about once a week or so.
I shower at least once a day if not twice.
My teeth are brushed at least twice a day.
I wonder if Jessica only washes her hair that often because she wears hair extensions/pieces? Still I find it gross. She once told Rachael Ray that she can wear her comfy jeans up to a week without washing them. She is definitely different.
I shower every day. I wash my hair every day - I have tried to train it to go every other day, but it gets way too greasy and looks gross... and teeth brushing is a given - definitely multiple times each day!
I shower daily
i brush my teeth a million times a day, it's ingrained - my Dad is an orthodontist ;)
But Hair washing? After years of daily washings I'm down to twice a week. And the funny part is my hair feels amazing (so soft) and has never looked shinier or healthier. I wish I knew about this years ago!
I have very thick, healthy hair that I have thinned every time I cut it. I wash it every other day...sometimes I can go 3, if I pull it back the third day.
I usually pull it up and shower on the days I don't need to wash it, but I'm a terrible snoozer and sometimes "postpone" the shower to evening to get to work on time. (I'm just sitting at a desk by myself anyway!) then shower that evening.
I'm intrigued by the idea of rinsing without shampooing. I've always thought if it gets wet it's just as much work to dry it, but I never thought about it looking better if I didn't strip all of the product out of it. I might have to try that.
Brush teeth at least twice a day.
Okay ladies and gents. I experimented this morning.
Yesterday was my no shower and no shampoo day, so today I just rinsed my hair and blow-dried/style it. It felt gross. The hairspray from the day before now feels like I have rubber cement in my hair. It doesn't LOOK bad, it just feels bad.
I think that rinsing thing might be good if you don't use product in your hair, but for those of us who do, not so good.
My final diagnosis (for me and my fine hair texture): 1st day, wash and blowdry/style; 2nd day, dampen and blowdry/style, third day repeat 1st day and so on...
Oh, and I brush my teeth twice a day on weekdays and three times a day on weekends. Flossing about once a week, just because I'm lazy. shh, don't tell my dentist.
I am completely shocked that this is as HOT a topic as it is. And that some people are determining that anyone who skips a day of washing their hair is "disgusting!"
Bottom line is that everyone's hair & body is different and unless you have an intimate relationship with this person, you have no idea if they look/smell great without washing their hair or themselves every single day, or if they are stinky and greasy DESPITE washing their hair and showering every single day!
We all know people of the extreme who have no sense of personal hygene--I'm seriously doubting anyone posting here is one of them. So friends, carry on with whatever works for you! I for one would like to try that Bumble & Bumble powder... I wish I were rich so I could fashion my hair exclusively in delicious B&B products.
From this discussion I tried the no washing today. Instead I just rinsed it with warm water, then a bit of cold water. All I have to say is I'm glad I can't see myself! YUCK! It's greasy and gross looking. I'm jealous of you women who can do this, but my stringy blond hair needs washing every day. Darn!
if i wash my hair every day, it gets frizzy, brittle and all around crazy. but i don't know about the three times a month thing.
