What is it with characters with lisps on children's television?
I mean, are they trying to teach tolerance for kids who have them? Or is it propaganda for speech impediments?
Bugs me.

during law school, one of the things that forever bonded me to your sister was the fact that there was a guy in the class below us i pointed out to her, because i liked his band t shirt (her space holiday - check them out) and she said, oh you mean cousin oliver? and i said YES. HE DOES LOOK LIKE COUSIN OLIVER. and our mutual ability to reference cousin oliver forged a link of friendship that has not yet failed.
And what is it with airing Victoria's Secret commercials during Rudolph? We were watching the ever-so-lame-digitally-enhanced Rudolph at 7pm the other night, and lo and behold, half naked women in "holiday undies" are dancing in front of us! Oh, by the way, love your site. Now that I've gotten that off of my chest, I won't be a silent reader anymore.
My daughter decided she was going to adopt one to be "cute" (She is 7!) to which we said, nu-uh.. and you better not be doing that at school! She dropped it after a few stern warnings about how that is NOT FUNNY. On the other hand, our autistic son DOES have a speech impediment, and if kids didn't make fun of him, that would be great.
Well you know how much I liked, and mimiced Anne Ramsey, and her lisp and impediment came from surgery from throat cancer that ultimately took her life, so I'm a bit defensive of lispers. I had a hearing impaired missionary companion with a soft speech lisp, too. We didn't get along, but it wasn't the lisp. But why the propensity to unnecessarily use lisping in children's animation and prolong the worst feature of baby talk, I don't get. Maybe a response to pressure from the wedding planners union or fond Boomer memories of Tweety Bird. Back when we blew up coyotes, tortued cats, and shot at rabbits in childrens cartoons. Oh, I guess we still do that and worse on Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy, but at least there not morning shows.
To tell you the truth, I have never thought about it until now, but it IS annoying (though I wouldn't deny my 3 year-old her slight throaty lisp for the world...at least not until she's five). The wonder pets is pretty much the only cartoon that is banned at our house, but only because my oldest daughter watched it over and over and over while I lay on the couch, pregnant with my second. To this day I can't hear the opening music ("The phone...the phone is ringing...") without an urgent need to hang over my toilet and wretch.
Awful stuff.
Hee--I forgot about 1L Cousin Oliver! He was a dead ringer. For both cousin oliver and another student at the law school, the latter of which also looked a lot like cousin oliver. I did NOT forget about wing's obsession with the band her space holiday, which would be hard to pronounce if you had a lisp.
I don't watch many kid shows, but I hate grown-up shows and movies where they force the kid to have a lisp to endear him/her to us. And I don't like parents who overly encourage their children's lisps and then complain of (1) baby-like behavior past the age when it is cute and/or socially acceptable, or (2) massive orthodontia bills. But what do I know...
DO NOT get me started on Baby Bear.
amen! we don't even watch children's shows anymore because my well speaking daughter started talking like a baby! annoying.
Hey! Just wanted to let you know how fabulous I think your blog is! Plus, I could not agree more here, my friend. "This is seweious!" :)
Now which of our daughters had to go to speech therapy as part of their orthodonture and do those buttons on a ring tongue exercises? Very expensive lisp avoidance protection (or was somebody secretly learning how to tie knots in cherry stems?)!
now, this is a bit off topic, but what is up with the characters on Sid the Science Kid? Are they ALL a bit off, or is it just me?
New to your blog. very funny.
Did you end up getting that rental house?
Bugs me too. I've actually been thinking about posting about this too, but mainly because of Baby Bear.
Totally bugs me too. My kids like to copycat the speech impediment and that drives me nutso!
This is sewious! ....Yeah it bugs me as well!
Just thought I'd say, I ADORE MING MING. I laugh every time she does the hula in coconut shells.
